Levitra is an ED drug which belongs to a group of medications called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitor. Erection is an hemodynamic process which is based on the relaxation of the smooth muscle in the cavernous tissue. During the sexual excitement nitrogen oxide is released out of the nerve ends and activates the enzyme called guanylate cyclase resulting in increasing the amount of cyclic GMP in the cavernous tissue. In results blood vessels relax and cause increased blood flow to the penis. By blocking PDE5 Levitra increases the amount of cGMP causing a strong erection. Levitra is effective only in the case of sexual excitement.

Levitra is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction which is manifested in inability to achieve and maintain adequate erection.

In which cases you must be cautious or completely discontinue the drug?

Levitra is contraindicated in the following conditions:

Known allergic reaction or reactions of hypersensitivity to any of the medication ingredients

Levitra is not supposed to use in children, adolescents under 18 years of age and women.

Levitra should be used with caution in patients with prolonged QT interval, anatomical deformation of the penis, diseases predisposed to priapism like Sickle cell anemia, leukemia. Levitra also should be taken with caution in liver or kidney diseases, high blood pressure, unstable angina, retina disorders, predisposition to bleedings and aggravation of stomach ulcer, aortal stenosis.

Which undesirable side effects may be caused by the drug?

The Levitra adverse effects include:

• CNS: headache, dizziness, drowsiness, hot flashes
• Cardiovascular system: blood pressure changes, stenocardia
• Digestive system: dyspepsia, nausea
• Respiratory system: nasal congestion or nasal bleedings
• Vision organs: blurred vision, increased intra-ocular pressure
• Urogenital system: myalgia, back pain, prolonged erection, painful erection
